Duke is committed to providing accessible, quality health care in its partnership neighborhoods. With oversight from Duke’s Community and Family Medicine and Division of Community Health, Duke has opened health clinics in community centers and Durham public schools to serve primarily low-income patients.

  • Lyon Park Clinic
    • In 2003, Duke opened the Lyon Park Clinic in the Community and Family Life Center at Lyon Park, operated by Lincoln Community Health Center and Duke’s Community Family Medicine Division.
    • The clinic receives about 5,000 visits during the year.
  • Walltown Clinic
    • The same partners opened the Walltown Clinic at 815 Broad St. in 2005 to more conveniently serve Walltown residents.
    • The clinic receives about 5,000 visits during the year.
  • Tooth Ferry dental van
    • Low-income children in 12 Durham public schools (including three partner schools) receive free dental care via the Tooth Ferry dental van, a community health initiative co-sponsored by Duke Health System, Durham County Health Department and Durham Public Schools. In 2003, the grant concluded and Duke donated the van to enable the county to continue the program.
  • School health clinics
    • School Health Clinics at George Watts Montessori Elementary (opened in 1996) and E.K. Powe Elementary (opened in 2004) enable students to get health care at school.
    • The clinics received 1,200 and 1,500 visits last year, respectively.
    • The clinics are run through a partnership between Duke’s Department of Community and Family Medicine, the Duke School of Nursing and Durham Public Schools.
