Results: Safety and Security

Duke and Durham partners are working together to make partner neighborhoods safer places to live and to help residents feel secure in their homes.

  • Duke-Durham Police Partnership :
    • Duke sought and received special N.C. legislation in 2004 so that campus officers could have jurisdiction in neighborhoods near East Campus. Duke has also committed to support city officers patrolling in those areas.
    • Duke set up a satellite office for campus police in Erwin Mill near Ninth Street and continues to support neighborhood anti-gang activities, such as the Walltown Neighborhood Ministries Street Reach.
  • Walltown Neighborhood Ministries :
    • Duke completed a grant to Self-Help in 2000 to purchase a Walltown grocery that had been a magnet for drug activity. The Walltown Neighborhood Ministries now utilizes it as their headquarters.
