Project H.O.P.E.: Get Involved!
Thank you for your interest in Project HOPE! We are always looking for more energetic students to volunteer and join the hundreds of Duke students who have made a difference in the lives of Durham youth! Getting involved will not only enrich your Duke experience but expand your perspectives of issues in education, and provide you with valuable experiences of working with children in the Durham community.
The Program in Education offers several service learning courses through which
you gain the opportunity to tutor in one of our five Project HOPE sites. The best
way to get involved is to register for one of the following courses:
o Education 100 - Foundations of Education (Fall and Spring)
o Education 112S - Children, Schools, and Society (Fall only)
o Education 118 - Educational Psychology (Fall and Spring)
o Education 152S - Civic Engagement and the Duke-Durham Partnership (Spring only)
o Education 162T and 172T (1/2 credit) - (Fall and Spring)
For more information about these service-learning courses, you can visit http://www.duke.edu/web/pfs/piecourses.html.
You can also become involved in Project H.O.P.E through Project Child, a program designed to create community within Duke and between Duke and Durham by allowing first-year students to volunteer in partner sites. For more information about Project Child, you can visit http://www.duke.edu/web/pfs/projectchild.html.
Student groups interested in volunteering with Project H.O.P.E can contact the Program Coordinator, Liz Henderson at lhender@duke.edu to discuss good fits. Student groups will also need to consult with the Community Service Center and fill-out a student-group Memorandum of Understanding in order to work with Project H.O.P.E sites.
We also welcome individual volunteers as tutors. Please contact the Project H.O.P.E. Program Coordinator, Liz Henderson at lhender@duke.edu for further information.
If you know a child who would benefit from a community-based after-school program, please contact the sites directly. Enrollment priority will be given to students who live in the neighborhoods in which these centers are located:
