Treat in Walltown

Letters to the editor

Over the course of 20 years, I had three children attend Durham's public schools. I have been in the audience for many school performances. On April 26, I saw a performance directed by Cynthia Henderson from the Walltown's Children Theater that topped all previous histories. I was overwhelmed and thrilled by what I saw.

This remarkably gifted dancer and teacher blended a performance of dancers from her program with second- graders from E.K. Powe. Using poetry and song, the evening showcased some phenomenally talented young adult dancers. Woven through the evening were dozens of 6- to 8-year-olds to whom Henderson has graciously given her time these past months, teaching them song and movement.

I have long heard of her extraordinary talents. But to witness the enthusiasm, free spirit and joy of these youngsters as they performed, to sit in the audience in the full diverse spectrum of their families, to feel the possibilities of making community amongst our differences and offering such powerful purpose and direction to these young people, well ... We surely are lucky in Durham to have Cynthia and Joe Henderson to offer their talents in the arts.
